Building Information Modelling (BIM), the process of generating and managing building information through it's life-cycle, is emerging as the most significant technological change to ever hit the AEC/FM industries. Beginning with the initial concept, BIM develops data through the design, marketing, documentation, construction, leasing, ongoing facility management and maintenance of the building.
Whether commercial, industrial or residential, BIM systems can substantially improve the design, documentation and construction processes.
Building Information Modelling provides the technology to enable Architects and Engineers to analyse and test the design prior to construction. Far greater flexibility is available through the development of the virtual building than could ever be imagined using the traditional 2D drawing based methods that have been around for centuries.
Web enabled BIM, and the emerging platform independent data standard IFC, will enable project teams to truely collaborate on international construction projects. It will underpin, greater design and construction efficiency and better buildings that perform as expected. The web enabled virtual building lives on along side the real building, providing a source of information for operators, users, facility managers, agents, and future construction projects.
